Athletic Excellence Fund
In 2013, the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Sport NL, announced a new streamlined application process for all current funding opportunities available to athletes, coaches/officials. This program will encompass the Premier Athletic Awards, Elite Athletic Assistance Fund, Team Gushue Scholarships and the SportNL Scholarships, in one application. The umbrella awards program will be known as the Athletic Excellence Fund.

Premier’s Athletic Awards

Program Overview

Description
Designed to recognize athletic excellence of the province’s athletes. Financial support is provided to select athletes to help with costs incurred through training and competition. Athletes must be currently training and competing in the sport indicated and intend to continue to train upon receipt of the award.

Elite Athlete Assistance

Program Overview 

Description
Designed to support high performance athletes from Newfoundland & Labrador. Financial support is provided to select athletes to support training and competition and must be used for this purpose only. Athletes must be currently training and competing in the sport indicated and intend to continue to train upon receipt of their award.

Team Gushue Award

Program Overview

Description
This award was established in 2007 in recognition of Team Gushue’s gold medal victory at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. The award will be presented to one male and one female athlete annually, who are currently attending a recognized post-secondary institution full time. Must have competed in a national or international level sporting competition in their last competitive season.

Sport NL Athlete Scholarship/Bursary

Program Overview

Description
This Sport NL award is designed to provide financial assistance to qualifying amateur athletes, coaches/ officials to help offset the costs of training and competition. Must have current full time attendance and be in good standing at a recognized post-secondary institution.

Application Process
-Athletes applying for more than one program should only complete and submit ONE application.
-Completed and signed applications are to be forwarded to the relevant Provincial Sport Organization on or before February 28, 2014.
-Applications for coach education and certification are NOT funded through this program. Please visit www.coachingnl.ca  for more information on funding opportunities in this area.
-Applicants must be a current member, in good standing with their respective Provincial Sport Organization (PSO).
-Athletes may receive funding from more than one program (Premier’s Athletic Awards, Elite Athlete Assistance, Team Gushue Award or the Sport NL Athletic Scholarship/ Bursary); however, athletes will only receive a Premier’s Athletic Award OR Elite Athlete Assistance, not both.
-Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.
