1980 MOSS TOURNAMENT

Higher Levels defeated Mundy Pond 4-3 in 11-Innings to win the 1st Annual Police Bantam Boys Softball Tournament and the William Moss Memorial on Saturday, March 23rd at Mundy Pond.

Dave Janes was the winning pitcher over John Pope.

Four other teams competed in the very successful tournament including two Cabot Street teams, Shea Heights and Buckmaster Circle.

1981 MOSS TOURNAMENT

Mundy Pond scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the 2nd Annual Police Invitational Minor Softball Title and the Constable Moss Memorial Trophy with a 7-6 squeaker over Higher Levels Sunday afternoon before a capacity crowd at Mundy Pond Diamond.

1982 MOSS TOURNAMENT

Higher Levels dumped Beothuck Crushing & Paving (East End) 13-7 to win the 3rd Annual William Moss Memorial Police Softball Tournament Sunday afternoon at Pleasantville.

Glen Barron hurled the win for Higher Levels while Dave Kavanagh was tagged with the loss. Barron also had three hits for Higher Levels.

Beothuck finished round robin play with a perfect 6-0 mark while Higher Levels had a 5-1 record.

Cabot Street, Kilbride, Shea Heights, Mundy Pond and Mount Pearl were other teams, which took part in the six-day tournament.

Cabot Street captured the 4th Annual Moss Softball Tournament during the weekend at Pleasantville with an easy 12-2 decision over Outer Cove in the title game.

Brian Stanford was the winning pitcher while Ken Dyer suffered the setback.

1984 MOSS TOURNAMENT

Portugal Cove stopped Virginia Park 5-3 to capture the championship in the 5th Annual Constable William Moss Memorial Minor Softball Tournament at Wyatt Park.

The tournament organized by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and sponsored by Pepsi Cola had fourteen teams participating.

It ran all week at Wyatt and Bannerman Parks with a total of 90 games played.

Portugal Cove downed Outer Cove the Provincial Pee-Wee A Champions 7-1 in one semi-final, while the other was a titanic struggle before Virginia Park came up with a 3-2 squeaker over Cabot Street in 16-Innings.

1985 MOSS TOURNAMENT

Virginia Park scored a run in the sixth inning en route to a 4-3 over Outer Cove in the 6th Annual Constable William Moss Softball Tournament in Pleasantville.

Graham Evely tossed the win over Mark Dwyer.

Virginia Park earned a berth into the Championship Game by defeating Waterford Valley 6-5, while Outer cove downed Higher Levels 6-2 to reach the Championship contest.

Quarterfinal action saw Waterford Valley upend Torbay 9-1, Higher Levels trounce Wedgewood Park 21-0, Outer Cove outscore Labrador City 14-10 with four runs in the top of the seventh inning and Virginia Park defeat Conception Bay South 9-0.

Corner Brook held off a seventh inning threat by Outer Cove to win the 8th Annual Constable William Moss Memorial Softball Tournament 4-2 Sunday in Pleasantville.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Matt Bellows fired the win for Corner Brook, while Chris Dwyer suffered the setback.

Cabot Street captured the 1st Annual Constable William Moss Memorial Girls Under-15 Softball Tournament Wednesday at Bannerman Park with a 14-9 victory over St. Phillips in the Championship Game.

Kelly Rideout pitched the win and had four hits at the plate. Cindy Stead took the loss.

Sandi Stead, Lisa Hanames & Deanne Oliver had three hits in a losing cause.

1988 MOSS TOURNAMENT

Corner Brook behind the strong pitching performance of Seymour Pilgrim defeated Outer Cove 4-0 Saturday to capture its second straight Constable William Moss Boys Softball Championship at Pleasantville Diamond.

Pilgrim fired a one hitter and struckout 11. Loser Shannon Power and Harold Kelly combined on a four- hitter and they had five strikeouts. The winners scored two runs in the first and two in the third.

1989 MOSS TOURNAMENT

In the Boys Championship Game, Mount Scio held off two comebacks by Outer Cove in the latter stages of the game and hung on to defeat them 10-9 for their first Moss Tournament Championship.

The winners were leading 6-2 after four innings when Outer Cove put the pressure on to look like what would be their first Moss Tournament Victory after being runners up on three previous occasions in 1985, 87 and 88.

Winning pitcher was Steven Rice, while Shannon Power took the loss.

Mount Scio scored the winning run with two out in the top of the eight when Rice hit a double up the middle and scored on short stop Gerry Hanlon’s single. With one out in the eighth, Outer Cove had left-fielder Mark Murphy on third base following his base hit single and an error but couldn’t capitalize the tying run as Shannon Power was called out on strikes to end the game.

In the Girls Championship Game, Waterford Valley defeated Clarenville 12-8  to win the 3rd Annual Moss Girls Tournament. Waterford Valley scored five runs in the second inning on six hits including four singles and a double.

Winning Pitcher Tonya Whitten also homered. Tanya Campbell led the winners with three hits Mandi Dodd had three hits as well. Losing pitcher Leslie Russell and Jackie Bishop each had two hits for the losers.
