Cyril Russell was involved in Softball in St. John’s for 16-years from 1973 to 1988. He was involved with the Commercial League in the role of President for 5-years from 1973 to 1977 and with the Senior League (Executive & Team Manager) for 11-years from 1978 to 1988.
Locally, Cyril was the Team Manager of 4 Senior League Championship Teams – Molson (1979), Big Ben’s (1985 & 1987) and Green Sleeves (1988). In 1979, Cyril was named the recipient of the Mike Byrd Memorial Award in recognition of his contribution to the success of the League or a Team from a non-playing capacity. He was also the Team Manager for 2 St. John’s Day Championship Teams – Molson (1982) and Green Sleeves (1988).
Provincially, Cyril was the Team Manager for 4 Provincial Senior Championship Teams – St. John’s Caps (1980 & 1981), Molson (1982) and Green Sleeves (1988).
Nationally, Cyril was a member of the 1982 Host Committee for the National Senior Ladies Championship held in St. John’s, was the Team Manager of the National Junior Men’s Team – Junior 50’s (1983) and was the Team Manager of 4 National Senior Men’s Teams – St. John’s Caps (1979 Bronze Medal), St. John’s Caps (1980), St. John’s Caps (1981) and Green Sleeves (1988).

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cyril Dawson Russell, age 82, on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.
Predeceased by his parents Gordon and Trixie Russell, and parents-in-law Jack and Frances Martin. Also predeceased by daughter Brenda Sceviour (nee Russell).
He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, his loving devoted wife Geraldine Russell (nee Martin); children: Jackie Russell (Ron Brown), Kim Batchelor (Dave), Cyril Russell (Donna Trask), and Sharon Russell; son-in-law John Sceviour; grandchildren: Scott Sceviour (Krysta), Trey Russell-Johnson, Lukas Russell, Kyle Batchelor, Nathan Batchelor, Giselle Trask-Russell, Melissa Stansbury, and Brianna Stansbury; great-grandchildren Jack and Wyatt Sceviour; siblings: Ruby Fry (Barnett), Phyllis Peddle (Laverne), Glenn Russell (Leone), Eli Russell (Faye), and Renwick Russell (Kim); siblings-in-law of the Martin family: Marie Jurgens (Jerry), John Martin (Emma), Steve Martin (Mary), Annette Coultas (Robert), Catherine Martin, Peggy Martin, and Bernice Martin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins in both the Russell and Martin families; long-time family friend, Jennifer Wadland.
A special thanks to niece Bobbi Russell, family friends Jessica Foley, and Deanne Dawe for their strength, support, and care for our Dad in his final weeks.
Husband, Dad, Poppy (Beba), and Great Grandfather, dad had many roles. A sports enthusiasts and great conversationalist, Dad always had something to say. Throughout the years he kept involved with hockey and softball, whether it be in the organization of it or just enjoying watching the game. Even at 82 years old, Dad still enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. We will always remember Dad as the best cook in the world and the Habs number one fan.
