Intermediate Provincials start this Weekend in CBS – Ned Nugent Field
Softball Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to announce that eight teams are entered into the 2009 Labatt Intermediate Men’s Championship this weekend in Conception Bay South.
Ned Nugent Field is the site of event, which starts Friday evening and runs through Sunday. (Two games will be held Friday at Lions Park in St. John’s.)
Conception Bay South is the host team for this event, and will be joined in Division A by Coastal Marine and Recreation (Carbonear), Conception Bay Central Junior Canadians and an entry form Corner Brook.
Division B consists of Bay Roberts Rovers, Placentia, Trimmer Homes (Torbay) and the Midget Team of Paul Davis Systems.
John Farrell, Adult Director with Softball Newfoundland and Labrador, says having eight teams in this event is a great springboard to Carbonear hosting the Eastern Canadian Men’s Intermediate C Fastpitch Tournament in September.
“This is a fantastic way for Softball Newfoundland and Labrador to start its 2009 season of provincial championships,” Farrell said. “Having eight teams in this tournament will provide great competition and allow for a solid weekend of fastpitch softball.”
“Softball Newfoundland and Labrador is especially pleased to see the inclusion of Corner Brook in this tournament. One of the plans for the new executive is to grow the game outside the Avalon Peninsula, and return softball to the status it once held as the province’s summer sport of choice. Seeing Corner Brook enter means that we have started down that path, and we’re very pleased.”
Farrell also announced that in addition to being a provincial championship, this tournament will double as a qualifying event for the Eastern Canadian men’s championship in September. The top finisher in this tournament, with the exception of Coastal Marine and Recreation, because it is already competing as the Host team, will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at this event.
“Because of what’s on the line, a provincial championship and a spot in the Eastern Canadians, we expect a very exciting weekend of ball in CBS.”
