Softballers Among Finalists – SportNL 2025 Annual Provincial Awards

Softball NL is pleased to announce that Jason Hill (Senior Male), Jared Picco (Junior Male) and Galway Hitmen (Senior Male Team) have been named Finalists for the SportNL 2025 Annual Provincial Awards.

Jason Hill has been named a Finalist for the Senior Male Athlete of the Year Award. The winner will be presented with the Ferd Hayward Memorial Award.

Jason Hill (St. John’s) enjoyed a successful season on the Local, Provincial and National softball diamonds in 2025. On the Local level, Jason was a key contributor to 3 Cheers Pub Miller Lite finishing 1st Place in the Regular Season (14-2-2), 1st Place in the St. John’s Day Tournament (4-0) and 1st Place in the Playoffs (6-0). Jason was named MVP of the Regular Season and St. John’s Day Tournament and he also captured the following awards for his performance during the Regular Season – Pitching Wins (10), Most Strikeouts (116), Lowest Earned Run Average (1.70), All-League Team Selection (Pitcher) and Player of the Month Honours (June and July). On the Provincial level, Jason and his 3 Cheers Pub Miller Lite team (4-0 Record) captured the Senior Men’s Fastpitch Provincial Crown. On the National level, Jason was a leader both on and off the field as Galway Hitmen (9-2 Record) captured Gold at the Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship in Kitchener, ON and he was named to the Tournament All-Star Team (Infield).

Jared Picco has been named a Finalist for the Junior Male Athlete of the Year. The winner will be presented with the Joseph P. Mullins Memorial Award.

Jared Picco (Placentia) enjoyed success on the Local, Provincial, National and International softball diamonds in 2025. On the Local level, Jared competed in the Senior and Intermediate Men’s Fastpitch Leagues. On the Provincial level, Jared participated in the U17 Men’s, Intermediate Men’s and Senior Men’s Fastpitch Championships, claiming a Silver Medal in the U17 event. On the National level, Jared represented the Province at the U17 Men’s, U20 Men’s, U23 Men’s and Senior Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championships, as well as at the Canada Games. Jared captured a Gold Medal at the Senior Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship with Galway Hitmen and was named to the All-Star Team (Outfield) at both the U17 Men’s and U20 Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championships with Team NL. On the International level, Jared captured a Bronze Medal with Team Canada at the U18 Men’s Pan American Championship in Bahia Blanca, Argentina.

Galway Hitmen has been named a Finalist for the Senior Male Team of the Year Award. The winner will be presented with the Edward P. Browne Memorial Award.

The Galway Hitmen put forth a total team effort to capture Gold at the 2025 Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship in Kitchener, Ontario. The Galway Hitmen finished the tournament with a 9-2 Record (.818 Winning Percentage) and outscored the opposition 48-25 (+23) along the way. The Galway Hitmen finished with a .267 Team Batting Average (77-for-288), and a 2.24 Team Earned Run Average (24 Earned Runs in 75 Innings Pitched). With team success came individual success as Colin Walsh was named MVP of the Qualifying Round, Sean Cleary was named Top Player of the Championship Round and Jason Hill was named to the Tournament All-Star Team – Infield. Capturing a National Championship is impressive, but what was more impressive was that the Galway Hitmen won three straight 1-run games on the final day to claim the Provinces 10th Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship.
