2011 Softball Canada Hall of Fame Inductees

(Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Bill Barron (Builder–Newfoundland & Labrador), Tom Doucette (Coach–Nova Scotia), Todd King (Athlete–Nova Scotia), Tim Macumber (Athlete–Nova Scotia) and Bob Stanton (Builder–New Brunswick) will be inducted into the Softball Canada Hall of Fame in recognition for their contribution and excellence in the sport of softball across the country. The induction ceremony will take place on November 12th, 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Bill Barron (St. John’s, NL) was born on August 6th, 1940, and started his softball career in 1957. He was a player for 10 years, an umpire for 12 years and a coach for 6 years, while also juggling several administrative roles throughout a softball career that now spans over 50 years. He has been an official executive member of the very successful St. John’s Senior Softball League since its very beginning in 1957, having been instrumental in the long term success of one of Canada’s best men’s softball leagues. In addition to his involvement with the league, he has also served as a member of Softball Newfoundland and Labrador’s Board of Directors at various times totaling 11 years of involvement, and has also been a part of the vast majority of Canadian and Provincial Championships held in Newfoundland & Labrador to date.

Tom Doucette (Middle Musquodoboit, NS), born on June 25th, 1948, will enter the Hall of Fame as a coach for his many contributions in this area. Locally, he coached various Junior, Intermediate and Senior teams between 1980 and 1992, and also coached Team Nova Scotia at four Canada Summer Games (Boy’s in 1989, 1993 and 1997; Girl’s in 2001), leading his 1993 team to a Silver medal. Following his Canada Games team involvement, Doucette moved on to the Junior Men’s National Team program, serving as Team Leader of the 2001 Junior Men’s National Team and later becoming an assistant coach (2002-2005) and head coach (2005 to present). He will lead the Junior Men’s National Team through the 2013 ISF Junior Men’s World Championship in Parana, Argentina. In addition, Tom has served on Softball Canada’s coaching committee since 1997, helping in the transition to the new NCCP. He has also been a Master Course Conductor since 1994.

Todd King (Halifax, NS) was born on February 4th, 1970. Over his career as a player, he played in several Canadian Championships, winning a Gold medal in 1998, and being named Most Valuable Player and Top Hitter in 1993 when his team won a Silver medal. He was also named to the All-Star team in both those years. In addition to his contributions at the Canadian Championship level, Todd also represented the Senior Men’s National Team from 1995 to 2000, winning Pan American Games Gold medals in 1995 and 1999 and an ISF Men’s World Championship Silver medal in 1996.

Tim Macumber (Windsor, NS), born on June 16th, 1970, will also be inducted as an athlete. At the Canadian Championship level, he won Gold medals at the 1992 Junior Men’s Championship and 1996 Senior Men’s Championship, as well as three Silver medals (1998, 2007 and 2009) and a Bronze (2002) at the Senior Men’s level. Throughout his career, he was named to the Senior Men’s Canadian Championship All-Star teams in 1995, 2000 and 2005. In addition, Tim played for the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006, winning a Pan American Games Gold medal in 2003.

Bob Stanton (Fredericton, NB) was born on February 4th, 1950 and will de inducted as a Builder. After earning his Law Degree at the University of New Brunswick, he began his involvement in our sport as a team manager in 1976 before becoming an umpire in 1983. Two short years later, he umpired at the 1985 Canada Summer Games, and worked his way up at the Canadian Championship level by umpiring at the 1988 Midget Girl’s, 1992 Senior Women’s, and 1994 and 1995 Senior Men’s, obtaining his ISF certification in 1995. He later officiated at the 1999 Pan American Games, and worked his last Canadian Championship as an on-field umpire in 2001. In addition to his work on the field, Bob served as Softball New Brunswick’s Umpire in Chief from 1990-1998, and also supervised 11 Canadian Championships between 1995 and 2007. He was appointed to the Officiating Development Committee in 2000, and later became Softball Canada’s National Director of Umpires in 2004 until 2008, when he was named the International Softball Federation Director of Umpires, a position he still holds. Throughout the years, Bob has held many umpiring clinics and supervised numerous events. In addition to all his administrative duties, Bob also volunteers his time locally in Fredericton, and had a major role in starting up a university league and rejuvenating the Fredericton Boy’s Fastpitch Association.

These five inductees will join the Softball Canada Hall of Fame at an Induction ceremony which will be held Saturday, November 12th, 2011. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with Softball Canada’s Annual General Meeting and Congress in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which will take place from November 10-13.
