Softball Newfoundland & Labrador is saddened to learn that Shawn “Chucky” Norris passed away on Sunday, January 13th, 2013.

Norris, Shawn “Chucky”: Passed peacefully away at the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex on January 13, 2013 at the age of 44. Predeceased by his parents Wilfred and Martha Norris. Left to celebrate his life with lots of memories are his brothers Gordon (Lisa) and Glen (Romina); special niece Madelyn; as well as a large circle of relatives and friends. A special thanks to the Kendell family and the staff of North 2 Hoyles building for their care and friendship over the years. Shawn was very active in the hockey and softball community especially with the Avalon Celtics, St. John’s Junior Hockey, and umpiring in numerous softball events for over 15 years. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held from Caul’s Chapel on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. with inurnment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations can be made in his memory to the Huntington’s Society.

Shawn “Chucky” Norris was actively involved with the umpiring program in the St. John’s region for approximately fifteen years. During his career, he attained the position of UIC for the St. John’s Minor Softball (Mid 90’s), member of the Metro Umpires Association from 1995-2004, and attended the Level IV Theory Certification in 2002. Shawn umpired in numerous provincial and league tournaments in both fast pitch and slow pitch ranging from mite to senior ladies and also had the opportunity to umpire the preliminary exhibition games of two World Tournaments held at the Caribou Complex in St. John’s; World Women’s 1994 and World Youth 1997. Shawn’s last official game took place at the 2005 Co-Ed Mite Provincial Tournament in Waterford Valley, umpiring the bases in the championship game. After the completion of the game, Shawn was recognized for his contributions to Softball Newfoundland Labrador during the medal presentations.
