RBC Training Ground – NL Sports Centre Regional Host

2016 was an inspiring and exciting year for Atlantic Canadian athletes at all levels – from local clubs all the way to the Olympics. We are so proud of the talented athletes coming from our region, and can’t wait to see what the future will hold.

There is an exciting development and funding opportunity for athletes across Canada, called RBC Training Ground, and St. John’s has been chosen as one of the locations to host a regional qualifying event.

Through RBC Training Ground, athletes will execute a series of workouts in front of various national/provincial sport organizations and their results will be measured against performance benchmarks to help identify those athletes who show the greatest potential. The four key areas to measure are – power, speed, strength and endurance. From each local qualifier, participants will be identified, based upon their athletic performance, to attend the regional final where up to 100 athletes will perform in front of national and provincial sport organization officials.

We want to make sure that all of our talented Newfoundland Labrador athletes have an opportunity to participate in the RBC Training Ground program, and we hope that you will share this information with your athletes and encourage them to register for the regional qualifying event on April 15.

WHAT:
RBC, in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), the Canadian Olympic Foundation (COF) and CBC Sports/Radio-Canada is renewing its search for Canada’s next great Olympian through RBC Training Ground.

RBC Training Ground will help find those undiscovered athletes with podium potential. We will provide them with funding and support to help fuel their Olympic dreams.

Sports like bobsled, rowing and track are filled with explosive athletes who came to these sports later in life – we know there are some hidden stars waiting to be found. The sooner they’re identified, the sooner they can transfer their talent and maximize their potential.

In 2017, RBC Training Ground is offering more opportunities for young Olympic hopefuls, with more local qualifiers taking place across the country and more national sport partnerships.

Up to 50 athletes from across the country could receive additional funding, mentorship and support from RBC and the COF to fuel their passion and Olympic dreams.

The top performer from each RBC Training Ground regional final will also receive the ultimate Olympic experience – a trip to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Athletes will compete in the following exercises:
