Community volunteer John Martin dies
John Martin, an exceptional volunteer within the community in which he lived, died Monday from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was 57 years old.
An extremely valuable contributor to softball and hockey, his excellent organizing ability was a major factor in the overall success that the Junior 50’s organization had within hockey and softball.
A long time employee of Canada Post, for 34 years, his lifetime was overflowing with volunteer service and commitments.
His softball career started in 1968 and included coaching, scoring and serving on the executive of the St. John’s Senior Men’s League. He was a founding member of the Junior 50’s Athletic Association in 1981 and made extremely valuable contributions to the organization that sent provincial representatives to four National Softball Championships between 1983 and 1986. He was a working member of six Host Committees for World and National Softball Championships.
Within hockey, he served as President and CEO of the Junior 50’s club that won four Provincial Titles and three Don Johnson Cup Trophies as Atlantic Champions. His contributions within hockey ran from 1982 to 1997 and included four National Junior Championships.
While his first sports involvement was as a “ball boy” for the St. Pat’s soccer teams when his father was manager, he served as a band instructor for the Air Cadets between 1967 and 1976. He was a dependable worker who was important and reliable as a volunteer for a wide range of community activities.
He leaves to mourn his wife Tina, daughter Judy and her husband Vitaly Borodinski and two grandsons, Sean and Jake.
At John’s request cremation has taken place with visitation at Caul’s Funeral Home.
